Senior Connections
The staff at the South Burlington Community Library is eager to provide an array of services to South Burlington's growing senior population. We welcome new ideas and suggestions for ways to expand these services. Please call Louise at 802-652-7076 with your ideas.

PROGRAMS
Library programs to meet a wide variety of interests and pursuits are available. Here are just a few:

What do UVM President Dan Fogel, Beekeeper Todd Hardy, Author Laban Hill, and Chef Gail Benson all have in common?
They have all been speakers at the Brown Bag Lunch Series. The Brown Bag Lunch series hosts an eclectic mix of speakers on the second Wednesday of each month at noon. Participants are invited to bring a brown bag lunch (not mandatory) to eat during the presentation. Tea and dessert are provided by the generosity of the Friends of the Library Organization.

Looking for a way to escape cabin fever?
During the winter months we offer a series of free Sunday Afternoon Concerts.  There is easy accessibility to the library on Sundays when there is an abundance of convenient parking spaces. Participants may ask questions and to talk to the performers during intermission or after the performance. Refreshments are served during intermission. You will find a warm and inviting environment on a cold winter day and perhaps make a new friend!

Join a knitting circle!
Knitting classes are held on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Volunteer Pat Raymond, welcomes knitters of all levels, including beginners. Join other knitters every Wednesday night, or just come to one session to get started or to get assistance in your current knitting project.

Expand your world and your knowledge!
The Library hosts a wide variety of evening program series and some Sunday afternoon events.

Don't miss the Friends of the Library Annual Spring Tea!
Every spring, the library hosts an elegant tea party for all of the members of the non-profit organization called the Friends of the Library. This group is an advocacy and fund-raising arm of the Library. Teacakes, English trifle, tea sandwiches, and Buckingham Palace Tea are served. Join the Friends to enjoy this popular annual event.

BOOK DISCUSSIONS

The Library's goal is to offer a congenial, non-intimidating, learning atmosphere for diverse readers to share their common appreciation and curiosity about books. Most of the book selections are fiction, and all have received literary critics' praise or awards. A variety of genres, styles and topics are offered, to please diverse readers' tastes. You may obtain a copy of each book one month prior to the discussion date, either at the Library's Circulation Desk (until the supply runs out), or at the end of each discussion meeting.

For a meeting schedule and a list of the books to be discussed this year, click on the Programs section of this Website, or request a copy (in handy, "bookmark" format) when you visit the Library. All persons over age 12 are welcome to participate; attend one session, some or all (no registration is required). Please take the opportunity for friendly visiting with other attendees, before and after the structured, book discussion period.

The Library staff will introduce the book with background information, and then facilitate the discussion with questions. Attendees are invited to participate with comments or questions of their own about the book. The Library staff hopes that the reader's experience of the selected book will be enriched by exploring, along with others, aspects that they had not thought about or enjoyed before. Many group members have noted that this program has encouraged them to appreciate different kinds of literature than they had in the past.

Morning (Senior Center) Discussion Series
Thursdays, monthly - 10:30 a.m.

This series is led by Library staff and is held at the Senior Community Center, located in the lower level of the Pines Apartments, off Dorset Street.

Evening Discussion Series at your Library
Thursdays, monthly - 7:00 p.m.

This series is led by Library staff and is held in the meeting room at the Library. Light refreshments will be provided.

In addition, the Library sponsors The Vermont Humanities Council Book Discussions. These are led by scholar, Merilyn Burrington, and are scheduled twice a year, with four meetings in the fall and four in the spring. Participants, along with the scholar and the library member liaison, select the upcoming series from titles made available through the Vermont Humanities Council.

HOMEBOUND DELIVERY

The South Burlington Community Library offers free monthly book delivery to interested homebound residents with a Library card.

“Homebound” means that the resident is not able to visit the Library for two months or more because of disability, illness or lack of transportation.  A resident is not eligible to receive homebound delivery services if they visit the Library with a driver or have someone else checking out Library materials for them during this same time period.

 How to request service…
If you or someone you know lives in the City of South Burlington and is homebound, contact the Library (652-7080) to inquire about service.

Starting to get deliveries…
When you call the Library, the Adult Services Librarian will first ask you questions to determine whether you qualify for Homebound Delivery. The Librarian will also ask you whether you have a Library card yet.   To register you for the program, she will ask you to provide information, such as your address and what types of books you would like to read.  Your first delivery will be in the following month after you contact the Library.  Deliveries are provided no more than once per month.

You help the Library staff select your books…
Based upon what you discuss with the Adult Services Librarian, and what you tell the volunteers when they visit you, the Adult Services Librarian will  select books for you each month that match your preferences for specific fiction or non fiction subject matter, a certain number of books, favorite authors or specific titles.

You may borrow up to 8 books per month.  Besides regular print books, you may request Large Print books, books on CDs and a CD player.  If you request a book that is not in the Library’s collection, availability is subject to a potential lending library’s agreement to provide us a long term loan at no charge.  If you check out a book that other people are waiting to borrow, you will not be allowed to renew it.

Library volunteers deliver the books…
The Adult Services Librarian will assign a Library volunteer to deliver books to you.  Library volunteers are carefully selected for this program.  They will deliver books no more than once per month.  You will keep the books for one month and may request renewals of some or all of the materials for a second month.

Please keep your books together in one place, ready for the volunteer to pick up each month.  Volunteers will not deliver or pick up books at a time that you are not personally present to exchange materials with them.

The volunteer will telephone you to schedule a regular delivery time each month that fits your schedule and their own.  You will always receive a phone call at your home before a book delivery occurs.

Your responsibility as an Outreach Program participant…
As a Library cardholder, you agree to return all Library materials and in good condition.  You are responsible to pay the fines for overdue items or the replacement cost of lost or damaged items.  Please inform the volunteer or Library staff in advance if you need to skip a monthly visit.  You must inform the Library if you wish to suspend or end the delivery service, or if your phone number or address changes.  You should contact the Adult Services Librarian if you have questions or concerns about the program.

Our responsibilities to you…
Library staff and volunteers will protect the privacy of your Library records.  The Library will ask the Activity Coordinator at group residences to agree to protect the privacy of your records too, when they assist the Library in the Adult Outreach program.

Staff will select items from the Library collection for delivery to you that are as close a match as possible to your stated preferences.  When your needs or preferences change, staff will try to accommodate any new requests that you discuss with us.  Staff will check in and out the materials which you borrow, maintain records and coordinate the volunteers who deliver books to you.  Staff or volunteers will always call you before each delivery to confirm the date and time.  Your materials from the previous delivery will be picked up each month for return to the Library, including when you inform the Library to discontinue service.
